Dr. Ivan Misner, the Founder and Chief Visionary Officer of BNI®, is widely regarded as the "Father of Modern Networking" by Forbes and CNN. He got a group of local, like-minded professionals together from other fields, ensuring there was no overlap in categories and therefore no competition in the group, to help bring business referrals to each other.
